Expired Nigerian Passport: Returning Home and Planning Your Departure

An expired Nigerian passport creates two separate questions: what Nigeria will accept for your return home, and what the airline and any transit country will accept for the journey. Check both before travelling. This guide cannot guarantee boarding.

Ask about your exact itinerary

Contact your nearest Nigerian embassy, high commission or consulate and the operating airline. State your citizenship, every passport you hold, their expiry dates, your route and the return journey. Ask which documents they require and retain the response.

Do this for each person in the party. A child without a Nigerian passport, a traveller whose booklet is lost and a dual citizen holding an expired booklet are different cases. Do not assume that a relative's previous boarding experience settles yours.

Renewal and emergency travel documents

The NIS passport service provides renewal guidance and directs Nigerians abroad to the nearest Nigerian mission. Use that route to establish the available appointment, documentation and collection arrangements.

NIS announced a Single Travel Emergency Passport for return journeys by Nigerians abroad with expired, lost or stolen passports. The announcement describes a single-entry document issued through designated missions. It is not proof that every mission offers an identical online application, fee or turnaround. Ask the issuing mission for its current process.

Make a folder containing your existing passport, any other identity documents requested, booking details, application references and official correspondence. Submit sensitive copies only through the channels identified by the mission.

Check connections and the journey back

Ask whether the proposed emergency document is accepted for each transit. A change of airport, overnight stop or baggage collection can involve entering the transit country. The document that permits travel to Nigeria may not permit that entry.

Plan the return flight before leaving. A single-entry emergency document is not a replacement for a passport covering subsequent international travel. Establish how and where you will obtain the documents needed to leave Nigeria and enter your destination. Do not book around an assumed renewal completion date.

At check-in

Bring the original documents and saved official correspondence. If staff need clarification, ask calmly for a document check or supervisor. Contact the airline's support team and the relevant mission if the issue remains unresolved. An online guide cannot override their checks.
