Nigerian Airlines Baggage Allowance and Excess Fees Guide (2026)

Navigating baggage rules for domestic travel within Nigeria can be challenging. Each airline operates with distinct guidelines, weight limits, and excess luggage fees.

To help you avoid unexpected charges at check-in, here is a breakdown of baggage allowances and costs for the major domestic airlines in Nigeria, including Air Peace, Ibom Air, Green Africa, ValueJet, and Rano Air.

Domestic Baggage Allowance Comparison Table

The limits below apply to standard domestic Economy Class bookings. Business Class tickets generally offer higher limits, typically 30 kg to 40 kg.

Detailed Airline Baggage Policies

1. Air Peace

Air Peace is the largest domestic carrier in Nigeria. Its standard economy ticket includes a 20 kg checked bag allowance. Any baggage exceeding this limit is charged a flat fee of ₦1,000 per kilogram at the airport desk.

2. Ibom Air

Ibom Air allows 20 kg of checked luggage for Main Cabin passengers. Premium Cabin passengers receive 30 kg. If your luggage exceeds these limits, excess rates apply at the check-in counter, usually ranging between ₦1,000 and ₦1,500 per kilogram. Note that Ibom Air does not accept individual bags heavier than 32 kg.

3. Green Africa

Green Africa runs a low-cost carrier model, meaning baggage is not always free:

  • gSaver tickets: Checked baggage is not included. You must purchase it separately.
  • gClassic tickets: Includes 15 kg of checked luggage.
  • gFlex tickets: Includes 20 kg of checked luggage.

Pre-booking extra weight online during ticket purchase is much cheaper than paying at the airport counter. Airport gate fees for excess baggage can reach ₦2,000 per kilogram.

4. ValueJet and Rano Air

Both regional airlines provide a standard 20 kg checked luggage allowance and 7 kg hand luggage allowance. Excess bags are billed at ₦1,000 per kilogram.

Essential Packing and FAAN Security Tips

To ensure a smooth check-in process and avoid airport confiscations by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), keep these rules in mind:

  • Liquids and Gels: Carry-on liquids must be in containers of 100 ml or less and placed in a clear plastic bag.
  • Power Banks and Batteries: These must go in your hand luggage. Under no circumstances should power banks or loose lithium batteries be packed in checked luggage.
  • Local Food Items: Items like palm oil, raw meat, and yams are either prohibited or subject to strict packaging rules. For example, palm oil is banned in hand luggage and must be double-sealed in leak-proof containers to be accepted in checked bags.
  • Weight Sharing: If traveling as a group, verify whether your airline allows you to pool your weight allowance. Most domestic carriers allow this if all passengers are checked in together.
