Navigating Lagos Murtala Muhammed Airport (LOS): A Survivor's Guide

Lagos Murtala Muhammed International Airport (LOS) is the busiest in West Africa. It is famous for its hustle. However, recent renovations have improved the experience. Here is how to survive and thrive.

The Two Terminals: MMA1 vs MMA2

They are NOT connected airside. You must exit and travel by road (5-10 mins).

  1. MMA1 (International): The old terminal. Handles all foreign flights (BA, Delta, Lufthansa).
  2. MMA2 (Domestic): A privately built, modern mall-like terminal. Handles most domestic flights (Ibom Air, ValueJet, United Nigeria).
  3. GAT (General Aviation Terminal): The old domestic terminal. Used chiefly by Air Peace and Green Africa.

Arrival at International (MMA1)

  • Immigration: Have your passport and arrival card ready. Lines can be long (30-60 mins).
  • Baggage: Trolleys are free (ignore anyone asking for payment). Porters may aggressively offer help; a firm "No, thank you" works.
  • Customs: All bags are x-rayed before exit. Do not bring prohibited food items.

Connecting to Domestic

  • Taxi: The safest way. Official airport taxis (Yellow/Black) or Airport Shuttles cost ₦3,000-₦5,000 for the short ride.
  • Walking: Not recommended with luggage due to heat and lack of sidewalks.

Departure Tips

  • Arrive Early: The traffic into the airport road can be deadlocked. Plan for 4 hours before international flights.
  • Check-in: Queues are physical and chaotic. Online check-in rarely lets you skip the bag drop queue.
  • AC Troubles: The AC in MMA1 can be temperamental. Dress significantly lighter than you would for a flight to Europe.

Food & WiFi

  • MMA2: Excellent food court (KFC, Dominos, Local Kitchens). Fast free WiFi (login required).
  • MMA1: Limited food options landside. Airside has better lounges.
