How to Survive a Layover at Nigerian Airports
Layovers in Nigeria can be tricky, especially if you need to switch between International and Domestic terminals in Lagos.
The Lagos Connection (MMA1 <-> MMA2)
If you arrive on an international flight (e.g., British Airways) and have a domestic connection (e.g., Ibom Air to Uyo):
- Immigration: You must clear immigration and collect your bags in Lagos.
- Transfer: You must take a taxi (~10 mins) to MMA2 or GAT. There is no airside transfer.
- Time: Allow at least 4 hours between flights. 3 hours is risky.
Where to Sleep (Lagos LOS)
- Legend Hotel Lagos Airport (Curio Collection): Located on the airport grounds (private jet terminal). Walkable but expensive.
- Ibis Lagos Airport: 5-minute shuttle ride. Good budget option.
- Joygate Hotel: 10 minutes away, reliable AC.
Where to Sleep (Abuja ABV)
- Nnamdi Azikiwe International: The new terminal has better seating, but for overnight, head to a nearby hotel.
- Peace Media Hotels: fast access to airport road.
Can I Leave the Airport?
- Visa: You need a valid Nigerian visa to leave the airport. Transit visas are not issued on arrival to everyone.
- Traffic: In Lagos, if your layover is under 6 hours, do not leave the airport vicinity. Traffic jams can make you miss your flight.
Things to Do
- Sim Card: Buy an MTN or Airtel sim card at the arrivals hall (needs biometric registration).
- Food: MMA2 Food Court is your best bet for a proper meal.
