Connecting International and Domestic Flights at Lagos Airport

Treat a Lagos connection as a sequence of tasks rather than a short distance on a map. A booking that shows LOS for both flights does not establish that they use the same terminal or that the second airline will protect you if the first flight is late.

First, identify both terminals

FAAN lists international Terminals 1 and 2 and the domestic Terminal 1 area; MMA2 is a separate domestic facility. Obtain the current full terminal names from both operating airlines. Do not infer the building from an airline's historical terminal allocation.

Ask how you physically transfer between those buildings, whether you need to enter Nigeria, and what assistance is available with luggage or reduced mobility. For international-to-domestic travel, plan for arrival formalities and a landside transfer unless the carrier confirms different arrangements for your exact itinerary.

Establish who is responsible for the connection

Ask the seller whether the journey is on one protected ticket or separate reservations. If it is protected, request the airline's accepted connection and transfer instructions. If tickets are separate, ask each airline what it will do if the first flight's delay causes a no-show on the second.

A website cannot set a universal safe minimum connection time. Work backwards from the onward flight's check-in or bag-drop deadline, including arrival formalities, baggage collection where required, terminal transfer and screening. Add a contingency appropriate to the consequence of missing the flight. Consider an overnight stop when a missed connection would be particularly costly.

Clarify baggage before departure

Ask where the bag is tagged and where you must collect it for customs or re-checking. Keep the tag receipt and the instruction together. A through-tag is useful information, but ask explicitly about any collection requirement rather than assuming it removes all arrival tasks.

Compare the allowance on each leg. A separate domestic ticket may not include the allowance from your international flight. Pre-arrange unusual or oversized equipment.

On the day

Monitor messages from both airlines. If the connection is becoming doubtful, contact the onward carrier before its deadline. Tell it your current position and ask for available alternatives.

Use the agreed transfer pickup, confirm the vehicle and driver, and keep the onward booking accessible. Once at the next terminal, confirm the counter and complete any remaining document, baggage and security checks.
